Running in the winter can be invigorating but requires the right clothing to keep you comfortable, safe and warm. Here’s a list of essential gear for outdoor winter running:

1. Layered Clothing
- Base Layer: Moisture-wicking fabric to keep sweat away from your skin.
- Mid Layer: Insulating layer like a fleece to keep you warm.
- Outer Layer: Windproof and waterproof jacket to protect against the elements.
2. Running Pants or Leggings
- Thermal or insulated leggings to keep your legs warm.
3. Hat or Headband
- A thermal hat or headband to keep your head and ears warm.
4. Gloves or Mittens
- Running gloves or mittens to keep your hands warm.
5. Running Socks
• Wool or synthetic running socks to keep your feet dry and warm.
6. Trail Running Shoes
- Shoes with good traction to handle icy or snowy surfaces. Waterproof shoes can also be beneficial. Or general running shoes with adequate padding to act as shock absorbers for the joints.
7. Reflective Gear for night time of low light conditions.
- Reflective vests, arm bands, or lights to ensure you’re visible in low-light conditions.
8. Neck Gaiter or Buff
- To protect your neck and lower face from the cold wind.
9. Sunglasses
- Polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes if you are running on a snowy day and need to protect your eyes from the glare of the snow and wind.
10. Hydration Pack or running bag
- Staying hydrated is important, even in the cold. A hydration pack, belt or running bag can keep water from freezing or becoming too cold. Ideally one could use a small insulated water bottle to avoid this issue.
Remember to listen to your body and adjust your layers based on the weather conditions. Happy running and stay warm!
